E-Builder, Dec 2004: The Tuckahoe Kiwanis Club handed out one of its highest honors to a Manakin resident at its annual installation banquet held at the University of Richmond on Sept 30 Richard Belcher took home the Hixson award.
Belcher, who retired after 40 years as an account executive at Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation, said he enjoys working on projects with the club But Belcher had no idea his fellow members had decided to give him the award “I was absolutely flabbergasted,” he said.
Frank Finley, a former recipient of the Hixson award, had nothing but kind words to describe his Kiwanis brother “He has served the club and community,” Finley said He’s been very active in all of our volunteer work such as Meals on Wheels and he was just elected incoming president”.
Belcher is currently the club vice president and will start his term as president October 1, 2005 Mark Puccinelli, one of the younger Kiwanis members, said being part of the club gives him the opportunity to meet people like Belcher and Finley “They’re both pretty good role models,” he said “Hopefully I can get to that point sometime in my life” The Hixson award carries with it a $1,000 donation to the Kiwanis International Foundation that will be used to help the fight against iodine deficiency disorder in third world countries.
The donation will be enough to provide iodized salt to 20,000 children Although it’s the world’s most preventable disease, thousands of children are born each day under the threat of iodine deficiency disorder, according to Finley.
Iodine deficiency can cause goiters to form and more seriously, it can cause brain damage that leads to mental retardation in children, Finley said.
The Tuckahoe Kiwanis Club has donated $10,000 to this cause and in total Kiwanis International has poured in $175 million to help keep children healthy.
Although young children are the top priority for the Kiwanis club, they also support numerous other endeavors, including the YMCA Camp Project, the American Red Cross and the Boy Scout Building Fund, which will be used to build a new camp in Goochland They provide scholarships to Godwin High School and also to Camp Baker, a facility for those with down syndrome.
The Kiwanis club raises most of their money through two fundraisers during the year They sell delicious Hubs Peanuts in November and December and each May, the clubs holds its Shrimp Fest This past year, the fest was held at The Diamond.
Belcher called the Kiwanis club a “breakfast club” as they meet every Friday at 7 am in the Southern States building on Broad Street in Brookview The Tuckahoe club currently has 35 members.
