by Anh Nguyen

The Kiwanis Club of Tysons Corner/McLean, VA is happy to announce the chartering of a new Service Leadership Program (SLP), the Pinecrest School K-Kids Club in Annandale, Va. The K-Kids was chartered on November 1, 2010 and we will serve as sponsor.

Above, newly chartered Pinecrest K-Kids participating at one of their first service projects, holiday sing-along and craft projects at Sunrise Senior Living in Falls Church, VA.

The club was chartered with 25 members in grades 2-6. These newest Kiwanis Family members have already been active in their community since their chartering. Service projects they have completed to date are raising over $500 for Uruguay with Trick or Treat for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), collecting bottle caps to recycle with the Recycle Caps with Aveda program, volunteering with holiday sing-along activities at Sunrise Senior Living in Falls Church, and participating in a park clean-up at the Audrey Moore RECenter at Wakefield Park.

Kiwanis Club of Tysons Corner/McLean, VA member, Ms. Nicole McDermott is currently serving as the Pinecrest K-Kids' Kiwanis Advisor and McDermott is also the Head of the School. The Faculty Advisors for this SLP are Ms. Cindy Mitlo, Pinecrest's fifth/sixth grade teacher, and Mrs. Jayne Cantor, Pinecrest's computer teacher.

"The kids have many ideas for creative volunteer projects and are so excited to be making a difference," says McDermott, "K-Kids is an excellent program to teach kids the importance of giving back to the community and I'm glad to have this program at Pinecrest."

This new SLP club marks the 10th club that we sponsor in addition to our 8 Key Clubs and 1 CKI Club. Our SLP clubs are spread throughout the Fairfax County area mainly in Divisions 20B and 20C for Key Club as well as the Ridgeline Division for CKI.
